Splinter (2008)

Splinter (USA, 2008) - Color, Director(s): Toby Wilkins
MPAA Rating: R
Approx. 82 min.

Z-rating: 8.5 out of 10 stars

A lovely young couple is driving home when they're stopped by a couple of hitchhikers. After pulling over, they are promptly carjacked by the other couple. (Some druggie and a man with a gun) They're driving back when suddenly, a critter runs out in front of the car and gets flattened. Problem is... whatever they ran over, also flattened one of their tires. They all get out to change the tire and the druggie flips out when whatever they ran over started moving. Everyone piles back into the car and they drive off to the nearest gas station. When they get there, the druggie goes off to the little girls' room while the other 3 go inside. In the restroom, the druggie finds a body covered in little "barbs" that gets up and tries to grab her. She comes running out trying to warn everyone but no one believes until that thing in the bathroom gets out and tears through her like katana through silk. From here on, things get SERIOUSLY fucked up as we find out what these spikey little creatures are.

This is one of the best creature features I've seen in a good many years, my biggest complaint about this movie is the frenetic camerawork that I hate SOOOOO fucking much. I think they were trying to compensate for how hokey their special effects might look if the camera were more steady. I guess they forgot about this demographic... people that actually like cheesy monster effects. I really liked this movie a lot and would recommend it to anyone, if only it didn't have that stupid camera effect...

Nudity: None that I can remember.

Gore: There was a pretty decent amount of gore in this movie, but being a creature feature... there's more mysterious black ooze than there is blood.

Awesome: FUCK yes!!! Without a doubt, one of the best creature features I've seen in a few years.
